NBC Bank statement to Excel

The National Bank of Commerce, NBC, was created in 1967 and is the oldest of Tanzania’s large banks. Its statement lists Trans Date, Narrative, Value Date, Debit, Credit and Balance, opening with a Balance B/F line, and prints the value date after the narrative rather than next to the transaction date.

A value date after the description

Most statements print the two dates side by side. NBC puts the value date after the narrative, where a simple reader would glue it to the description or mistake it for an amount. Here it is recognised as a date and kept apart, so your description stays clean.

The value date matters for interest and for matching cheques: it is the day the money really counts.

Paying taxes to the TRA

Business customers paying VAT, PAYE or other taxes to the Tanzania Revenue Authority can filter the narratives for TRA and see each payment with its date, useful when your accountant prepares the annual return.

An example line

On the PDF: 12-Mar-2025 DAWASA WATER BILL 12-Mar-2025 38,500.00 736,210.00. In your sheet: date 12/03/2025, description DAWASA WATER BILL, value date 12/03/2025, money out 38,500.00.

Balance B/F and combined months

When you join several monthly statements, each Balance B/F must equal the closing balance of the month before. A gap would mean a missing statement, and the check would show it.
