Barclays prints each transaction over two or three lines: the payment type on top (Card Payment, Direct Debit, Bill Payment, Counter Credit…), the payee in the middle and a reference underneath. That is easy to read and awkward to paste into a spreadsheet, where one transaction ends up spread over three rows. StatementEasy puts each transaction back on a single row with its date, a full description, Money in, Money out and Balance.

Saving a Barclays statement as a PDF

  1. In the Barclays app, tap More. Then open Statements and documents.
  2. Choose the account and the statement. Statements are listed by month; Barclays keeps several years of them online.
  3. Tap the download arrow. On iPhone choose Save to Files, on Android save it to Downloads.
  4. On a computer, use Online Banking. Your statements are in the documents section (My Barclays documents). Download each month as a PDF.

Need transactions from this month, before the statement is issued? Print the transaction list from Online Banking to PDF and convert it the same way — the running balance is still used to check the rows.

Things that make Barclays statements tricky — and what happens to them

  • Three-line transactions. The payment type line and the reference line are attached to the right transaction, so the description reads like “Direct Debit · British Gas · Ref 1234”.
  • Newest first. Some Barclays exports list the latest transaction at the top. That order is detected and the balance check still works; you can export oldest first or keep the order as printed.
  • Balance brought forward. The “Start balance” and “Balance brought forward” lines are used for the check and are not counted as transactions.
  • Pounds and pence. Amounts such as 1,250.00 are read as numbers, ready for SUM and pivot tables, without the £ sign getting in the way.

Checked row by row, not just in total

Barclays prints a balance after each transaction. StatementEasy checks every row: the previous balance, plus Money in, minus Money out, must give the balance printed on that row. If a single line was misread, you see exactly which one, and the totals are compared with the start and end balance of the statement as well.

For Self Assessment, Making Tax Digital and your accountant

If you are self-employed or a landlord, your bank statements are usually the starting point for your tax return. Convert the twelve months from 6 April to 5 April, use the Categories sheet to group income and expenses, and hand your accountant a spreadsheet instead of a folder of PDFs. Software that you use for Making Tax Digital, such as Xero or QuickBooks, can import the Xero CSV or QBO file for months the bank feed does not cover.

For a mortgage or a rental application

UK lenders and letting agents usually ask for the last three months of statements. Drop them together and open the Insights tab: it shows your monthly income, regular commitments such as rent, loans and subscriptions, and any large one-off deposits a lender may ask you to explain. The lender summary can be downloaded as its own spreadsheet.

Questions

Does it work with Barclaycard statements?

Barclaycard statements are card statements, so use the credit card converter. It reads purchases, payments and interest.

Can I convert a Barclays business account statement?

Business current account statements use the same columns as personal ones and are read the same way. Drop several months at once and combine them.

Are dates exported in the UK format?

Yes. Dates are read as day/month, never confused with the US order. Before downloading you can export them as DD/MM/YYYY, ISO (2026-01-31) or another format.

Is my statement uploaded?

Your browser reads the PDF first, on your device. Only if it cannot read it is the file read on our server and deleted after reading. A statement we still cannot read is kept encrypted for up to 14 days so we can add support for it.

Is StatementEasy made by Barclays?

No. StatementEasy is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Barclays Bank UK.
