New Zealand banks tested on their statement layouts
For an IRD return, a home loan, a rental application, your accountant or a household budget, you often only have the PDF statement. StatementEasy converts it to Excel, CSV, OFX, QIF, Xero or QuickBooks files and checks every balance.
New Zealand statements have their own habits: dates without a year, the Particulars, Code and Reference fields, account numbers like 12-3456-0123456-00. All are read in full.
Banks
Detailed pages: ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Westpac, Kiwibank, TSB, The Co-operative Bank.
Seven layouts, one sheet
ANZ prints dates without a year; BNZ keeps Particulars, Code and Reference in columns; ASB and TSB use Debit and Credit; Kiwibank one signed amount; Westpac and The Co-operative Bank Withdrawals and Deposits. In your sheet each becomes date, description, money out, money in and balance.
Statement words
| On the statement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Particulars / Code / Reference | The three payment fields filled in by the payer |
| AP | Automatic payment you set up |
| DD | Direct debit taken by a company |
| EFTPOS | Card payment in a shop |
| Opening balance | Balance at the start of the period |
Xero, made in New Zealand
Xero started in Wellington and many New Zealand businesses use it. When the bank feed misses a period or an account, convert the PDF and import the file instead.
KiwiSaver and the tax year
The tax year runs from 1 April to 31 March. Convert the year’s statements together and search for KiwiSaver contributions, donations or rental expenses in one table.
Accounts at several banks
Everyday account at Kiwibank, mortgage at ASB, savings elsewhere? Drop all the statements together; each balance is checked within its own account.
Bank statements for a New Zealand visa
Visitor, student and work visas may require proof of funds. Check Immigration New Zealand’s requirements for your case; our guide on bank statements for a visa application covers the general points.
